Aspire

An image taken by one of the workshop participants at Aspire

As part of our community partnership projects, Artist Elina Medley ran four weekly photography workshops with Aspire members. They engaged in a variety of activities such as slow shutter photography, portrait and still life as well as a gallery visit with director Katy Barron and a photo walk.

The programme gave participants an insight into settings and techniques around exposure, focus and composition as well as an insight into the work of other photographers. Here is a selection of the photographs they took during the workshops.

Aspire empower adults facing homelessness, poverty and disadvantage. Established in 2001, Aspire has been tackling the most complex social issues in Oxfordshire for over 20 years. They support local people into and towards employment and housing, as the most powerful way to break the complex cycles of homelessness, re-offending and poverty.

Photo Oxford collaborated with a number of community partners in 2025. To read more about that work take a look at our Partnership Projects page.

PARTICIPANT FEEDBACK

It really has opened my eyes moving forward with my life doing something I enjoy visiting galleries also taking photographs.

I always wanted to try photography and Elina’s group has inspired me to save for a camera in 2026.

The photography course was great, definitely broadened my horizon, found the whole thing really positive, great people, always leaving the course feeling great about myself, really insightful. It’s definitely something I will pursue.
