Murmurings of the Skin is a work that explores what it means to be human by looking both at the ways we connect and feel our bodies as well as the ways that we are beginning to use technology to repair, enhance and potentially even replace them.

The work grew out of a fascination with the body, of what it means to feel comfortable in one’s own skin, but it grew to explore the integration of technology with bodies and where that might take us. At what point does the integration of something man-made affect how we feel about ourselves or others? And as we enter the world of robotics and a future of potentially capable humanoids, how do we feel about these new beings, and how we might all get along together?

  • Olivia Arthur is a London-based documentary photographer and visual artist. Her work explores themes such as gender, intimacy, the human body and physicality. She studied mathematics at the University of Oxford and photojournalism at the London College of Printing. She is a member of Magnum Photos and served as its president from 2020-2221.
