Rob Judges $Faith

Rob Judges, Easter Orthodox Church

The starting point of this project was a piece in the papers saying that less than 50% of the UK hold any religious beliefs. It seemed a moment to document the diminishing group. I have pictures of many practitioners and many religions, and throughout my project, I have photographed Buddhist Diwali, Jewish Hanukkah, Islamic Friday prayers, the Sally Army, and self-appointed street preachers.

We have a long tradition of this type of photography; Henry Taunt captured Oxford in 19th century, through Bert Hardy, Tony Ray Jones, and Homer Sykes. The pictures show not extraordinary moments, but the quieter thoughtful side of people. The pictures are of people of Faith, practicing their beliefs or learning about the values and practices that they hope will lead to ‘Revealing Truth’ for them. I am trying to make the ordinary interesting, capture the mundane and unspectacular, the quiet moments that make up an everyday life or environment. The moments when we are there but not there, the individual in the crowd, the silence between the words
