Photographer and artist, Jermaine Francis’s specially commissioned body of work interrogates the idea of the Pastoral Landscape, as a space of neutrality - politically & ideologically - where the relationship of the Black presence is alien, due to its historical absence.
By re-presenting the traditional aesthetics of the Pastoral, using a combination of strategies, repositioning the Black figure within the frame, and disrupting the viewing experience, Francis encourages the viewer to reconsider the perception of the English rural, and the role of landscape in the traditional narrative of English History.
