Marko Dutka, Daphne-Rembrandt
These portraits of Daphne Selfe challenge the reverence of ‘Old Master.’ Feminised as ‘Old Mistress,’ the compliment becomes an insult –revealing centuries of bias. If Titian or Rembrandt had been women, would history have framed their genius differently? These images question gender, power, and the language of art.
The choice of Daphne Selfe for this project is founded on several factors.
Selfe has a tremendous profile as muse for artists Barbara Hepworth and Sir William Coldstream. She has been photographed by Mario Testino, Rankin and Nick Knight, to name just a few. Daphne is the ideal choice for using a little gender manipulation to re-present some of the great geniuses of painting’s history. This body of work seeks to make the portrait both a representation of a population and a depiction of the individual, the unique self/Selfe.

Press Quotes:
“I loved Marko Dutka’s Portrait of Genius, photos of striking eighty-something artist’s model Daphne Self after self-portraits by Titian, Dürer, Rembrandt and others. Dutka’s comments on gender and power are brilliantly embedded in his strong and beautifully lit images.”
Alison Nordstrom, Curator of Photographs and Director of Exhibitions, George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film
